Gangnam-gu Promotes Further Exchanges with USFK Awarded Special Prize by Dept. of the Army for its Contribution to Korea-US Exchanges Gangnam-gu received the third prize in the field of special events as part of the ´COMREL Award´ from the U.S. Department of the Army, marking the first time a non-military governmental organization had received this award in Korea. The Department of the Army assesses the level of exchanges and affiliations between local communities and the Army in 50 countries throughout the world where the U.S. Army is stationed to give the ´COMREL Award´ for improvement in relationships with local communities. The Department of the Army spoke highly of the friendly relationship between Gangnam-gu and USFK. Gangnam-gu and USFK have been active in co-hosting a variety of exchange events including the International Peace Marathon, concerts, Commander-in-Chief´s lectures on national security, and experiences at local homes and other cultural experiences in Jeju Island and Gyeongju, as well as exchanges in sports, education, security, and other related matters. The ceremony was held on May 5 at the U.S. Dept. of National Defense. Celebrating the 5th anniversary of exchanges with USFK, Gangnam-gu held a ´ Gyeongju Cultural Experience Program´ for three days from April 8 by inviting 44 U.S. soldiers and their families. They experienced Balugongyang and Sunmudo lectures visiting Golgul-sa (temple) and looked around Bulguk-sa, Seokkulam, Cheonmachong, Cheomseongdae, King Munmu´s Tomb, and Namsan Buddhist heritage remains. The USFK Military Band presented a small concert to local dwellers in Gyeongju.
